NBA Fit Clinic Comes to Andrus

Andrus students got a lesson in healthy living from former NBA player Felipe Lopez Thursday during an NBA FIT clinic that was a part of the grand opening ceremonies for the school’s McGee Hall gymnasium.

“We’re gratified to have NBA Cares help us celebrate the reopening with a fitness clinic," said Brian Farragher, Andrus’ chief operating officer. 

The renovations to the 6,000 square foot facility, which was originally built in 1950, were made possible by a donation of $170,000 from Stephen Andrus, the grandson of John E. Andrus who founded the orphanage on the Yonkers/Hastings-on-Hudson boarder in 1928.

The three-year renovation includes new bleachers, beams, flooring, upgraded lighting and a new AC/heating system.

“Stephen Andrus has truly shown his dedication to this organization with his generous donation and without him the gymnasium renovations would not be possible,” said Farragher. 

In addition to the NBA, several local officials attended the event including: Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano, Minority Leader John Larkin, Yonkers City Council President Chuck Lesnick, Yonkers City Council Education Chair Michael R. Sabatino, Yonkers Director of Child Welfare Terri Miller and Reina Arias-Yizar, manager of the Westchester County Department of Social Services.

McGee Hall is used for indoor sports, graduation, assemblies, meetings, conferences and concerts at the school, which provides services to for residential and non-residential students and families that foster social and emotional well-being.
