Police: Mischief Spree Linked to Drinking Party Goers

Irvington Police are looking for information involving a series of property damage incidents where a group of teens are believed to have also allegedly terrorized Irvington residents during the height of Superstorm Sandy by throwing rocks at windows.

 On Oct. 28 police discovered that three mailboxes—on Harriman Road, Lewis Road and Sycamore Lane—that were ripped out of the ground, in addition to a damaged sign that leads into the Cedar Ridge neighborhood. Police believe the damage came from teens attending an unsupervised underage drinking party on Cyrus Field Road on Oct. 27.  The Cedar Ridge sign was vandalized last year and cost $600 to repair. 

Police said mailbox and sign tampering are an ongoing issue in the village. 

During the height of the storm on Oct. 30 around 12:45 a.m.—a terrified Osceola Avenue resident reported a boulder being thrown through their living room window. Police said that the incident was not storm damage related, and was the result of a large rock being deliberately thrown through the window of the home.

Around the same time, a woman on Connor Court reported that she thought someone was trying to break into her home, and that rocks were being thrown at her windows. Other houses in the area and in the Legend Hollow development also reported having rocks thrown at their windows.

“People were petrified,” said Sgt. Michael Foley of the Irvington Police Department.

A Field Terrace resident reported a plaque with his or her address on it stolen. It was later found on a nearby street. Streets signs were also pulled up out of the ground on several neighboring streets.

A total of 25 acts of criminal mischief were tallied, including felony and larceny charges.

“These people were putting others lives at risk,” said Foley. “At a time when trees and electrical wires are falling down, police are having to chase them around.”

The next night on Halloween, a house on Camden Court was egged. Police believe that individuals who were at the underage drinking party on Oct. 27 maybe responsible for these incidents between Oct. 28 and Oct. 31.

“Parents know whether their kids were out that night [Oct. 30], and we hope they contact us,” said Foley.
