Record Numbers Honor Dobbs Ferry's Kelly at Tournament
Local rallied at a softball tournament over the weekend to remember John Cleaver Kelly.
Supporters in large numbers turned out Saturday to honor the late John Cleaver Kelly at the third annual softball tournament held in the Dobbs Ferry man's name.
According to event organizer John Tessitore, more than $15,000 was raised at the community event to support OCD and mental health awareness and research.
"It was truly amazing seeing so many people come out to honor John," said Tessitore. "There were people there that I hadn't seen in over a year, and it was really like a mini Dobbs Ferry reunion."
Kelly was just 24-years-old when he took his own life a few years back after a long battle with obsessive–compulsive disorder.
The tragedy compelled his friends and family members to keep his memory alive and help others avoid the same fate.
"It was just beautiful, seeing 120 people wearing the number 7 in honor of John was an amazing sight, and it was inspiring," Tessitore reflected. "Seeing all these people supporting John, and continuing his legacy is something extremely special, and it just shows the incredible community, and spirit that Dobbs Ferry is."
But the day extended past local connections—Tessitore said there were supporters touched by Kelly's store who came to show their support.
"It's still amazing how the tournament grows each year, and more and more people are impacted and inspired by John's story," he said. "I know his story is only going to continue to grow, and his legacy will continue to inspire people to 'Never Give Up.'"
