Report Of Person Carrying An Axe Leads To School Lockdown

Hastings police didn't find anyone carrying an axe and declared the area safe, but stepped up school patrols for the rest of the day.

HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, NY — Hastings-on-Hudson schools went into a lockout on Friday after police received a call reporting a person on foot carrying an axe in the area.

In a letter to families, Superintendent William S. McKersie said the security measure was "precautionary" in response to the situation.

"Most importantly, all staff and students were safe and focused on their classes and activities throughout the entire event," McKersie said. "Please know that the safety of our students and staff is our top priority. I want to extend my thanks to the Hastings-on-Hudson Police Department for their swift response and continued support with each school and the entire district."

The lockout lasted about an hour while police searched the area .

At 9:19 a.m., the Hastings-on-Hudson Police Department received a call reporting that an individual was walking on Chemka Pool Drive while carrying an axe. Patrols were sent to the area, and the Hastings-on-Hudson School District was notified.

Officers could not locate anyone carrying an axe and determined the area was safe. Hastings-on-Hudson police officers were on patrol outside the schools during dismissal time and at school activities for the remainder of the day on Friday.
