Rockslide Causes Building Collapse, Yonkers Police Say To Avoid Area
A boulder dislodged from the hillside behind the building on Saw Mill River Road, striking it and causing the collapse, fire officials said.

YONKERS, NY — A runaway boulder has created destruction at a building in Westchester County, but officials say that, so far, no serious injuries have been reported.
The Yonkers Fire Department says that around 7 a.m., on Monday, units responded to reports of a building collapse at 1256 Saw Mill River Road, the address of Peterson Tool Rental, a two-story commercial property.
Once on the scene, crews found that a significant part of the building had collapsed due to a rockslide behind the property.

After further investigation, firefighters found that a large boulder had dislodged from the hillside behind the building, striking the structure and causing the collapse.
Yonkers Fire Department crews secured the scene, conducted a search for any occupants, and confirmed that nearby homes and properties were not affected. No injuries have been reported, and officials say there is currently no danger to the public.

HazMat units are currently working to contain and mitigate a fuel spill from a 500-gallon interior heating oil tank. YFD says that absorbent materials, booms, and sewer cap covers are being used to prevent further spread of the spill.
Drivers are asked to avoid the area and seek alternate routes. Saw Mill River Road will remain closed in both directions from Tompkins Ave. to Rider Ave., until further notice. The Yonkers Police Department says that through traffic should avoid the area of Saw Mill River Road, between Odell Ave. and Jackson Ave.
