Serial Dumper, 2 Others Arrested After 6-Week-Long Probe Into Garbage Left Around The City: Police

One of those arrested was linked to at least ten illegal dumping incidents, according to the Yonkers Police Department.

YONKERS, NY — A mystery on the Hudson has been solved, and Yonkers police say the culprits are more than your average litterbugs.

"It seems like it would go without saying, but dumping garbage in our city is illegal," YPD said announcing the arrest of three men they say were behind a string of separate illegal dumping incidents. "Dumpers, be warned — you will be identified; you will pay hefty fines; you will wish you had just thrown your garbage out as you were supposed to."

The City of Yonkers and the Yonkers Police Department announced the recent dumping arrest of the three suspects, "who found out the hard way that Yonkers is the wrong spot to dump their garbage."

After a 6-week-long investigation, the Crime Control Strategies Division identified those who illegally dumped items in Yonkers, according to YPD. Two of them were arrested, while the other one was issued a summons.

Xhevahir Kalaja, who can be seen in a video provided by Yonkers police, was responsible for over 10 dumping incidents, cops said. Police say that he repeatedly dumped tires and garbage from his business into the woods at Scotti Park.

Kalaja was arrested on September 10, for violating Yonkers City Code. Working with the Department of Environmental Conservation, Yonkers police filed criminal charges under the New York Codes Rules & Regulations Law. Kalaja's vehicle was impounded that evening, and the Westchester County District Attorney's Office will be prosecuting the case.

A Mohegan Lake man dumped commercial garbage on Cumberland Drive and in an area along Central Park Avenue las weekend, according to police. He was arrested and charged with a Yonkers City Ordinance violation. His vehicle was impounded.

In late August, a New Rochelle man dumped garbage bags and furniture into a Department of Public Works dumpster at Scotti Park, overwhelming the dumpster which was meant for city use. He was issued a summons. His vehicle was impounded and later released.
