Volunteer Opportunities Of The Week: Summer Reading Buddies

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — Each week, Patch will be highlighting volunteer opportunities in the Hudson Valley. This will be a chance to help your community and be an opportunity to give back — perhaps in a way you didn't consider before.

This week, we are putting the spotlight on some opportunities in the Hudson Valley.

Summer Reading Buddies
Summer Reading Buddies help young children improve their reading skills during the summer months. Volunteers are provided with books and they work one-on-one or in small groups. Summer Reading Buddies can choose their level of commitment—from a few hours, to once a week, to the full program. This is perfect for volunteers ages 16+ and groups!
Date: Weekdays from 7/1-8/6; multiple opportunities

Back-to-School Backpack Drive
Many families struggle to make ends meet, and school supplies often end up at the bottom of the list. Family Services of Westchester aims to give local children—from Pre-K to high school—the tools they need to make a strong start for the upcoming school year by providing them with backpacks filled with school supplies. Volunteers are needed to donate age-appropriate backpacks and the school-essential items to fill them. This is a great family-friendly and group activity.

Delivery Drivers for Family Essentials
Dependable volunteers with a current driver's license and insurance are needed to assist with monthly deliveries of essential supplies that will benefit local families in need. Items include boxes of kids' and seniors' diapers and wipes, boxes of clothing, personal hygiene supplies, boxes of women sanitary hygiene products, and children's books. Drivers must be 30+ and available on the 25th day of the month to deliver items from Armonk to Mount Vernon.

Summer Reading and Math Volunteers
STEM Alliance is seeking volunteers for its Co-Op Summer Enrichment Program's Reading Nook and Math Cave. This program provides five weeks of academic and recreational experiences for nearly 300 underserved elementary students in the Mamaroneck School District through hands-on STEM activities, outdoor exploration and recreation, fields trips, and academic skill-building.

Dietary Aide Volunteers
Wartburg is seeking dedicated volunteer Dietary Aide Volunteers to support its dietary staff with non-clinical tasks to help ensure a positive dining experience for its senior residents. Volunteers will greet and assist residents in the dining area, distribute meals and beverages, perform light cleaning, and engage in friendly conversation. This is the perfect opportunity for teens 14+.
