Broadway Residents Want Traffic Solution to 'Prevent Tragedy'

Residents of Broadway, just north of the Watson School, are demanding that the Village of Rockville Centre address their concerns about reckless driving on their street.

“Children on Broadway are 17 months in waiting for a fix,” Thomas Kane, a Broadway resident, recently told the village board of trustees. “We need to have something done to prevent a tragedy.”

According to Kane, drivers will “zoom” down the streets near Watson School to avoid traffic and lights on Peninsula Boulevard. The issue came to a head in June when a young girl walking by Watson School, on North Centre Avenue, was almost hit by a reckless driver, but fortunately was pushed out of the way by her brother. Soon, parents met with village officials, and an unmarked police vehicle started patrolling the area.

Mayor Francis Murray said the village was responsive to the issue at Watson School, and is looking at further solutions there, including a second crossing guard.

Kane said he and his neighbors would like to sit down with village and police officials to discuss solutions, such as limiting turns and making the street one way during certain hours.

“We sit here knowing that children on the block are exposed,” Kane said. “You have a crossing guard at Watson, but children on Broadway live here with the same traffic problem.”
