In school news, South Side High School seniors Rachel Shenker and Deanna Davoudiasl won the Nassau County doubles tennis championship, and the senior class won Spirit Week, which was capped off with the Homecoming Parade. The girl's and boy's varsity soccer team finished its seasons on a high note — the boys won its last two games; while the girls beat Malverne and tied Sacred Heart. The football team suffered a 56-0 loss to Hewlett, and at the Board of Education meeting, officials introduced new class presidents, honored students in the Siemen's Science competition and spoke about the possibility of the county eliminating its guarantee.

In governmental news, County Executive Ed Mangano blasted Minority Leader Dinae Yatuaro's critique of his budget plan. We ran question and answer columns for races in the 9th Senate District (Dean Skelos v. George Sava), 14th Assembly District (Brian Curran v. Dermond Thomas) and 4th Congressional District (Carolyn McCarthy v. Francis Becker).

In crime, an RVC residence was robbed while the owners slept, and the trial for the alleged murder-for-hire case involving former RVC resident Susan Williams began in county criminal court.

In community and arts news, DIY columnist Melissa O'Connor outlined how to use cork to decorate a dining room table, and the village hosted a 9/11 candelit vigil on the Village Green. A local social networking group hosted a food drive at Panera Bread on Merrick Road, and collected more than 80 pounds of food.
