The new salt shed will be built with timber and treated with an oil-borne preservative. The preservative prevents the penetration of salt brine into the wood fiber and extends the expected life of the structure to beyond 40 years. The total estimated cost of $2.1 million is being funded in part by $400,000 in state grant funds secured by New York State Senator Shelley Mayer.
This new salt shed is a part of approximately $10 million of capital improvement projects underway at the Department of Public Works including a new fuel depot, upgrades to Building 7, and demolition and construction of a new Building 5.

City of Rye Mayor Josh Cohn said, "It is wonderful to see these badly needed DPW improvements underway, with more on their way. These projects and our in-process sanitary sewer renewal work has required years of City Council energy and City staff work, and great New York State financial help through Senator Shelley Mayer and Assemblyman Steve Otis."
State Senator Shelley B. Mayer said, "I am pleased to join the City of Rye for a ceremonial ribbon cutting for the new salt storage shed at Disbrow Park. As New York State experiences an increase in volatile weather conditions, it is critical that our local municipalities have the resources they need to do their jobs and keep our residents safe. I am happy I was able to secure $400,000 from New York State to help construct this shed. I thank Mayor Josh Cohn, the Rye City Council, and City Manager Greg Usry for their attention to this matter, and I thank the staff of the Rye DPW for their hard work and dedication to maintaining the city’s physical infrastructure."
Assemblyman Steve Otis said, "Congratulations to the City of Rye, Mayor Josh Cohn, the entire City Council, City Manager Greg Usry, and everyone on the Department of Public Works staff for the many key projects in the pipeline. I am especially pleased with the important sanitary sewer and stormwater infrastructure projects the city is undertaking. I have been able to assist the city with state water infrastructure grants, one my top priorities. Rye has received several state awards including from the clean water grant programs that I have championed. Senator Mayer and I work closely together on all these funding initiatives."
