Marshlands Conservancy and Milton Harbor

The Marshland's Conservancy is located off of Boston Post Road, just before the Jay Heritage Center. The Conservancy is a 151 acre wildlife sanctuary on Long Island Sound in Rye, owned and operated by the Westchester County Department of Parks, Recreation, and Conservation.

Originally part of the childhood home of John Jay, a Founding Father and the 1st Supreme Court Justice of the United States, the land was generously donated to the County by Mrs. Zilph Devereux in 1967 to be conserved as park land. Marshlands was dedicated and opened to the public in 1972, and six years later, Mrs. Fanny Wickes Parsons (of the neighboring Lounsbery estate) donated an additional parcel which increased the Conservancy’s forested land and waterfront. In 1997, Marshlands was written into the Westchester County Law to be preserved as a wildlife sanctuary “in perpetuity.”
The Conservancy is comprised of five unique habitats, including the expansive salt marshes that lend Marshlands its name, a diversity of forest types, a large meadow, fresh water ponds, and a half-mile of shoreline along Milton Harbor, an inlet of Long Island Sound.
