LAKE RONKONKOMA, NY — Suffolk police are seeking the public’s help in identifying two suspects they say spray-painted a building at Lt. Michael P. Murphy Memorial Park in Lake Ronkonkoma earlier this month.

The pair spray-painted offensive images and words on a building at the park, which located on Town of Brookhaven property off of Lake Shore Drive, on Sept. 2 at around 8:40 p.m., police said.

Murphy, a U.S. Navy SEAL from Patchogue, died in an intense firefight in the hills of Afghanistan in 2005. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.

Other honors in Murphy's name include a destroyer, SEAL training pool, and post office, and museum.

The park dedicated in his honor contains an etched stone monument, which was donated by Lido Stone of Calverton after the original was destroyed by vandalism in 2018, Brookhaven Town Supervisor Dan Panico said. After that, the town partnered with Penn Globe to install security lights and two surveillance cameras to record any activity at the park, according to Panico.

The suspects drove a dark-colored sedan of unknown make and model, he said.
