Police Issue 70 Summonses at Truck Checkpoint on LIE

At a truck checkpoint on Friday, five trucks were placed out of service and 70 summonses were issued by the Suffolk County Police Highway Patrol Bureau Motor Carrier Safety Section, Sixth Precinct Patrol Officers and the New York State Environmental Conservation Police, police said. 

Between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Friday, a weight and safety checkpoint on the Long Island Expressway near exit 66 targeted trucks carrying heavy loads that may have violated safe operating conditions.  The goal of this targeted enforcement is to “remove dangerous commercial vehicles from Suffolk County’s roadways and to protect the highway infrastructure from the damage caused by overweight trucks,” said police. 

Twenty-six commercial vehicles were weighed during the five hour checkpoint and seven were found to be in violation of weight regulations, racking up associated fines of over $110,000. Five vehicles were inspected for safety and all five were placed out of service, police said. 

Fifty-eight summonses were issued for weight and safety violations, 12 for violations of New York State Environmental Conservation Law.
