Car Fire Backs Up Long Island Expressway For Miles

The car broke out in flames in the center lane on Thursday night, officials say.

Traffic was backed up to a dead stop while firefighters battled a car fire on the Long Island Expressway on Thursday night, officials say.

Firefighters responded to the westbound lanes near Exit 61 in Ronkonkoma to find a car fully engulfed in flames in the center lane around 11:30 p.m.

All westbound lanes on the LIE near Exit 61 were closed while firefighters put out the blaze. Traffic was backed up for miles, officials say.
