FARMINGVILLE, NY — Former Boston Celtics player Chris Herren shared his struggle with addiction with Sachem High School East students on Tuesday, school district officials said.

His presentation began with a video his basketball career, from his days playing in high school to college, and then on to his professional life, and ultimately, his downfall due to drug abuse, according to school officials.

He delivered an inspiring presentation in which he discussed his recovery and
how he now helps others who are struggling, school officials said.

Herren had a drug addiction that caused him to overdose four times, and also led to his arrest, The Newark Advocate reported.

He has presented to more than two million students, athletes, and community members about substance use prevention and wellness since 2009, school officials said.
