Funds Approved To Clean Up Motts Pond In Holtsville
The Brookhaven Town council approved a $350,000 bond resolution to fund the cleanup.

The Brookhaven Town Council last week approved a $350,000 bond resolution to help fund the cleanup of Motts Pond in Holtsville.
The cleanup will help address issues such as the pond's water turning bronze because of a buildup of iron and metals, according to town officials.
In 2006, the town council authorized $750,000 for remediation work on the pond, which is located near 249 Buckley Rd.

According to the town, work will include adding underground water filters.
In 2001, a federal judge found the Town of Brookhavenliable for polluting Motts Pond and Creek, saying several toxic chemicals from the town's former landfill were released into the pond.

Town residents brought the suit against the town in the mid-90s, alleging the town violated the Clean Water Act and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act.
