LONG ISLAND, NY — A quick-moving snowstorm brought joy to children across Long Island Friday, but pain to anyone trying to get somewhere.

More than half-foot of snow had already fallen by 7 a.m. in many places on the island. See town-by-town totals reported so far by the National Weather Service below.

"We're beginning to see the snow taper from west to east, with conditions improving everywhere by lunchtime," the weather service's New York office tweeted at 8:26 a.m.

A winter storm warning remains in effect until noon in Suffolk County. A winter weather advisory expires at the same time in Nassau County. Suffolk may see an additional 1-3 inches of snow. Another inch could accumulate in Nassau, the weather service says.

Schools across the island are closed with many of them enjoying a traditional snow day.
