Impaired Driver Crashed Car In Police Vehicle On Long Island Expressway: Cops

His car careened into the police vehicle, then into a pickup truck stopped at the site of an earlier crash, Suffolk police say.

RONKONKOMA, NY — A 28-year-old man was charged with driving while ability impaired by alcohol after he crashed his car into a marked police vehicle in Ronkonkoma on Saturday, Suffolk police said.

The man, who is from Brentwood, was driving a 2020 Honda sedan eastbound on the Long Island Expressway, just east of Exit 58, when he crashed it into the rear of a stopped police vehicle that had been directing traffic from a prior crash, and then into a 2008 Ford F150 that was involved in the original crash, at 3:42 a.m., according to police.

The driver of the Ford was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of minor
injuries, police said, adding that no officers were in the vehicle at the time of the crash, and there were no other injuries.

The police department's Selective Alcohol Fatality Enforcement Team responded to the scene, determined the Brentwood man was intoxicated, and charged him with driving while ability impaired by alcohol, police said.

He was scheduled for arraignment at First District Court in Central Islip, but the details were not available on Monday morning.
