Woman Dies After Jumping Off LIE Overpass

The woman was struck by a car after she jumped Friday afternoon. Police say it was a suicide.

ISLANDIA, NY – A woman who was struck by a car after jumping from a Long Island Expressway overpass Friday evening in Islandia has died.

It happened around 6:40 p.m. Sources say the woman jumped from the overpass on Old Nichols Road.

"We can confirm it was a suicide," a Suffolk Police spokesperson told Patch Friday night. Police said the woman was in her early 50s.

The LIE was closed in both directions near Exit 58 as police investigated, but it is now fully reopened.
