Police Officer Helps Deliver Baby On Long Island

The officer helped deliver a baby girl in the backseat of a car Wednesday night.

CENTEREACH, NY — A Suffolk County police officer helped deliver a baby Wednesday night.

Officer Jessica Proios responded to a 911 call of a woman in labor on Hammond Road near Nicolls Road in Centereach at about 9:15 p.m.

Suffolk police said that when Proios got to the scene, Ashley Silvering was in the backseat of a car and about to deliver a baby. Silvering's husband, Mike, told Patch the baby was already out before emergency responders arrived.

"Quite an adventure," Mike Silvering said in an email.

Silvering, 36, of Oakdale, and her newborn were transported by a Centereach Fire Department ambulance to Saint Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson. Silvering and the baby are both doing well.
