SACHEM, NY —The prestigious Brookhaven National Laboratory, an award-winning research institute affiliated with the U.S. Department of Energy, has accepted Sachem High School’s very own Angelina Thotam to its Center for Functional Nanomaterials. The high school junior will be investigating the behavior of copper catalysts during methanol formation, which will help the institute to determine the specific nature of the chemical reactions on the metal’s surface. The information from the research will be used to improve the process of making methanol from carbon dioxide.
Methanol could be used as a solvent, pesticide or even an alternative fuel source, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
