SACHEM, NY — Star Students are found in classrooms, on concert and theater stages, and at debate lecterns, and out in the community doing good things to make life better for all of us.

Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize Star Students, and we’re working to tell the stories of these outstanding kids to their neighbors.

This submission comes from Wendie Birdsell, who nominated her grandson, Christopher, from Sachem.

How do you know the star local student?

He is my grandson.

Why do you believe the star local student should be recognized?

He has excelled from starting as a special Ed child with many needs to becoming a member of the National Junior Honor Society. He started in Sagamore Middle School with the support of many, especially Dr. Dorman. He went from Special Ed classes straight to the Honor Roll. He was determined to help and support others; always supporting the underdog. He also always volunteers for whatever is needed. He has not missed a day of school, even with the pandemic.

Even though he lives with his grandparents, he remains in close contact with his parents and his sister. He was always supportive of all his sisters' needs and was determined to make the world a nicer place, sharing love and happiness. His smile lights the day as he greets everyone with a kind word. Outside of school he opens doors, helps the elderly, and if he sees someone needs help, he jumps right in. He enjoys going to church and helping out there by taking pictures of the congregation.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the star local student?

He is a kind, supportive gentleman. He makes the world a brighter place.

Congratulations on your achievements, and all of our best wishes to you in the future, Christopher!
