This Week in Sachem Football 2011: Week 1

A historical look at the Flaming Arrows on the gridiron.

Every week we'll breakdown each game and what it means from a historical perspective in the football programs at Sachem North and East. As the season progresses, the numbers and statistics become more and more interesting, but here's the information from Week 1:

  • Sachem East is 3-5 all-time in Week 1 games.
  • Sachem East is 5-2 all-time against Central Islip.
  • The win broke a 15-game losing streak, the second longest in Long Island football behind Stony Brook.
  • It was their first win since Week 1 of 2009 ... or in 729 days.
  • The victory is the first for new Sachem head coach Mark Wojciechowski.
  • Sachem East played Central Islip last season during Week 1, resulting in a 43-7 Sachem loss.

  • Sachem is 3-7-2 all-time against Bay Shore.
  • Sachem has been outscored 224-188 against Bay Shore all-time.
  • Sachem is 27-24 all-time in Week 1 games.
  • Their last meeting was during Week 8 of the 2010 season, a 34-7 win for Sachem. Prior to that, the last time they played Bay Shore was in 1971.
  • The Flaming Arrows have won 10 of their last 11 Week 1 games and six in a row.
  • It's the 13th time Sachem has scored 25 or more points in a Week 1 game.
  • Sachem has won 22 of its last 24 games dating back to the final game of the 2008 season.
  • The Dalton Crossan File: With his 145 yards and four touchdowns, Crossan broke the 1,000 yard mark for his career at Sachem. He currently has 1,116 yards, good enough for No. 15 all-time in Sachem history. If you add in his numbers from two varsity seasons at Shoreham, he has 2,160 career yards as a high school football player. He needs 415 yards to crack the top 10 at Sachem, which wound bounce former teammate Jesse Scanna out to 11. Crossan's four touchdowns tie a personal best, which he set last season in the semifinals against Northport, the same game he had a single-game best 170 rushing yards.

Next up: North hosts Northport on Friday at 7 p.m., and East travels to Bay Shore Saturday at 2 p.m.
