Wenonah Hosts Annual Pumpkin Chuckin’ Competition
Fifth-grade students were challenged to construct a catapult that could perform best in three challenges.

Design and engineering principles propelled students during a recent competition at Wenonah Elementary School, where fifth grade students were challenged to construct a catapult that could perform best in three challenges, testing distance, power and accuracy.
Separated into teams, students constructed their catapults from household materials such as spoons, rubber bands, popsicle sticks and canned vegetables. Once the creations were finalized, the students competed with their classmates to select the winning team from their class that would move on to the grade-level competition.
At the conclusion of the testing phase, the students competed in a schoolwide competition, yet again testing distance, power and accuracy. To the cheers of their fellow classmates, students competed in several rounds before a winner was named for the best overall catapult and best distance catapult.
