BAYPORT, NY — To mark Fire Prevention Month, kindergartners from Academy Street Elementary School in the Bayport-Blue Point School District visited the Bayport Fire Department for an interactive lesson on fire safety and prevention.

Inside the firehouse, firefighter Ray Cooney spoke with students about key safety tips — including when to call 911, why it’s important to know their home address, what to do if a room fills with smoke, and the importance of having a family escape plan and working smoke detectors. They also practiced the classic “stop, drop and roll” technique.

Students got the opportunity to see a firefighter suit up in full protective gear and learned how each part of the uniform helps keep them safe. The young visitors explored the tools firefighters use every day, then stepped outside for a closer look at the firetrucks. Each student even had the chance to spray a real fire hose and climb into the trucks to see the equipment firsthand.
