Callhoun Girls Volleyball Defeats Sayville, Heads to Championships

State championships are scheduled for this week.

SAYVILLE, NY — Calhoun High School's girls volleyball team is heading to state championships, after their win against Sayville High School on Friday.

Merrick's Calhoun beat Sayville, 3-0, in the Long Island Class A championship at Hauppauge, Newsday said.

Sayville had been previously undefeated.

The championship is scheduled for Nov. 19 to 20 at Cool Insuring Arena in Glens Falls, New York.

This is Calhoun's first girl's volleyball team to make it to the championships, Calhoun coach Christina Strezenec told Newsday.

Calhoun's Julia Lawrence had 10 kills, five digs, and two blocks. Victoria Zovich had five kills, six blocks, and four aces. Gianna Lucchi had 30 assists and Ella Maldonado had 17 digs and an ace.

Sayville entered winners of 20 straight matches and had only dropped one set this season, Newsday said.
