LI School Super Seriously Injures Motorcyclist In DWI Crash: Police

A Nassau County school super was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated after seriously injuring a motorcyclist, police say.

SAYVILLE, NY — The outgoing Port Washington Schools Superintendent was arrested on Sunday for drunk driving after crashing into and seriously injuring a motorcyclist, Suffolk County police said.

Michael Hynes, 53, of Sayville, was driving a 2019 Honda Civic northbound on Railroad Avenue when he attempted to turn left onto Depot Street and crashed into a southbound 2022 Harley-Davidson motorcycle operated by Alberto Fernandez, 63, of Sayville, around 9:05 p.m. on Sunday, police said.

Fernande was transported to Bay Shore's South Shore University Hospital for treatment of serious injuries, police said. Hynes was transported to the same hospital with minor injuries.

Hynes was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, police said. He announced earlier this month that he was stepping down as superintendent.

That decision has been expedited, a spokesperson for the district confirmed to Patch: "The district is aware of the incident involving our superintendent of schools, Dr. Michael Hynes. We are gathering additional information. Dr. Christopher Shields has been appointed acting superintendent of schools, effective immediately. When more information is available, the community will be updated."

He was held overnight at the Sixth Precinct and is slated to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Monday.

Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks.
