One Of Suffolk's First Police Officers Remembered In Funeral Services

OAKDALE, NY — One of the first ever Suffolk County police officers was laid to rest last week.

Thomas P. Compitello, 87, of Oakdale, former chief of patrol with Suffolk County Police, died on Friday, Dec. 16, his obituary said.

Compitello was born and raised in Amityville. After graduating from Amityville High School, he earned his Bachelor’s Degree at New York City College of Technology.

He served in the US Army and Amityville Police Department before becoming one of the first police officers to join the newly formed Suffolk County Police Department in 1960.

He remained with Suffolk Police for 48 years, before retiring as chief of patrol in 2008.

Friends and relatives celebrated his life on Dec. 21 at Raynor & D’Andrea Funeral Home in West Sayville, and attended a funeral mass on Dec. 22 at St. Martin of Tours Roman Catholic Church in Amityville. He was laid to rest at Long Island National Cemetery.

Compitello is survived by his wife of 63 years, Pat, his three children, as well as his seven grandsons, and his sister, Jeanette Ingenito.

In lieu of flowers, his family asked that contributions be made to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, located at 2361 Hylan Blvd, in Staten Island.
