5 Children Killed In Fiery Crash On Hutchinson River Parkway: Police

The sole survivor is a 9-year-old boy, police said.

SCARSDALE, NY — Five children from Connecticut died overnight in a fiery crash in Scarsdale, according to police.

The victims, four boys and a girl, ranged in age from 17 to 8, police said, adding the sole survivor was a 9-year-old boy. NBC Connecticut reports that the five children are from Derby and the family had recently moved there.

The incident occurred shortly after midnight when a Nissan Rogue being driven by a 16-year-old boy veered off the Hutchinson River Parkway north of the Mamaroneck Road exit, struck a tree and caught fire, according to the Westchester County Police Department. No other vehicles were found.

The surviving child was riding in the cargo area of the SUV and escaped out the back, police said, adding he was taken to Westchester Medical Center with injuries that were not life-threatening.

The crash remains under investigation.
