Astorino: Extend Law For Salary Differential For Miltary Leave

County Executive Robert P. asked the Board of Legislators to extend for another year a county law that guarantees that county employees who are serving on active duty are held harmless on their pay.

The legislation, first adopted in 2001 and extended numerous times since then, authorizes the county to pay the servicemen the difference between their regular county salary and their military salary. During this period, county health, dental and vision benefits are also safeguarded. 

“This remains the right thing to do,” said Astorino. “Our troops put their lives on the line to protect our freedom. It is essential that we make sure they and their families are financially secure.” 

There are currently six employees who are using the supplemental military leave. Since 2001, 50 employees have benefited from this act.

The legislation picks up where state law that mandates six-months of gap payments ends.
