Medical Examiner: Peter Sauer Died of an Enlarged Heart

The 35-year-old former Stanford basketball captain died Sunday during a basketball game in White Plains.

An enlarged heart is what caused the death of former Stanford basketball captain and Scarsdale resident Peter Sauer during a community basketball game on Sunday, according to The Westchester County Medical Examiner’s office.

"The Westchester County Medical Examiner’s office today did an autopsy on the body of Peter Sauer," according to a statement from the County. "The cause of death pending further examination of microscopic slides was determined to be cardiomegaly (enlarged heart). There was also a skull fracture that appears to have resulted from his collapse to the floor."

The 35-year-old hit his head and was unable to be revived while playing in the Open Summer Adult Basketball League—a competitive competition organized by the White Plains Department of Recreation and Parksat  in White Plains.

Sauer, who recently left his job in finance at Bank of America in New York City, leaves behind his wife Amanda and three children, according to an obituary posted in the New York Times.
