Scarsdale trustees haveΒ voted no on a Homestead Tax Option that some say would haveΒ tripled the tax burden on unit owners inΒ the only condo complex in town,Β all of whom are over 55.
The decision affects all property owners in Scarsdale but was centered onΒ theΒ 42 units at One Christie Place in the village.
Scarsdale10583.com posted this storyΒ today about the decisionΒ and theΒ League of Women Voters of Scarsdale, opposed to the adoption,Β prepped thisΒ summary of the case.Β The Scarsdale Forum was for the Homestead Option. You can read their report here.
Taxes are a hot issue in Scarsdale right now (andΒ when are they not anywhereΒ in Westchester?)Β due to a town-wide revaluation, which is the only time you can adopt the Homestead Tax Option in New York.
The goal of the option is the make sure residential property owners don't get hit during a reassessment againstΒ commercial property owners. The savings to single-family homeowners would have been small in relation to the majorΒ jump for the condo owners, the League said.Β
According to municipal officials theΒ data collection phase of the new assessments are to beΒ implemented on theΒ June 1, 2014,Β assessment roll.Β
