Scarsdale Schools To Lengthen Class Days

The change is effective this coming fall.

SCARSDALE, NY - While schools in Scarsdale are weeks away from closing for the summer, students who are returning in the fall will face longer school days.

In an effort to dedicate more time to classroom instruction, the school district has added 16 minutes to elementary school days, added six minutes to the middle school schedule - changes also include longer periods and the elimination of homeroom - and longer high school periods of two to three minutes each.

"In the short term, please don’t hesitate to let your child/children’s building principal(s) know if you
have clarifying or logistical questions about these changes relative to your child/children’s school(s)," Scarsdale Schools Superintendent Thomas Hagerman wrote in a community letter. "For the longer term, we will continue to look at how to best use instructional time across the District kindergarten through 12th grade, and will continue to encourage building teams to refine schedules to optimize classroom learning, based on our evolving goals and, most importantly, for the benefit and well-being of Scarsdale’s children."
