SCARSDALE, NY — Instead of finishing her high school career in the classroom, one Westchester teen got her hands dirty as she sprinted to graduation, and she wouldn't have it any other way.

Audrey Ryan, a Scarsdale High School senior, has just completed a spring internship at SoundWaters, a climate science education organization, where she spent five weeks at their Coastal Education Center at Cove Island Park in Stamford. She was part of a larger group of interns from several area high schools who, instead of attending classes for the final weeks of high school, did internships to experience a real-world business environment.

The interns worked every day under the guidance of SoundWaters professional educators, teaching the science of the Long Island Sound to over 2,000 pre-school, elementary and middle school students from across the region. They helped students in classroom and lab settings, as well as on the beach and in boats where young students do field work.

"It was fun to work with SoundWaters professionals to help these younger students. I also really enjoyed learning about Long Island Sound and how a nonprofit works," Ryan said.

The SoundWaters High School Internship Program has a reputation as a model for professional development and environmental stewardship.
