What's Next for Scarsdale's Unsuccessful Budget?

Scarsdale schools' budget was voted down by a majority Tuesday evening, sinking the district's fiscal plan for the first time in four years.

"Tuesday's decisive school budget defeat demonstrated that the proposal did not reflect the wishes of a majority of voters at this time," Vicki Presser, Scarsdale schools' spokeswoman, told Patch Wednesday. "The message clearly is to exercise more financial restraint."

So what's next?

The school board will enter a listening period, Presser said, to hear out residents' issues.

Informal input is encouraged, alongside particiation in two formalized workshops, Presser said. The workshops are slated for Thursday, May 23 at 7:30 p.m. and Wednesday, May 29, also at 7:30 p.m.

Both sessions will be in the Board Meeting Rooms 170-172 at the high school.

"At its next regular meeting on June 3, the Board will review options and adopt a new budget proposal for 2013-14," Presser added. "After a legally-prescribed waiting period, the public will have an opportunity to vote on this second proposal June 18 at the Middle School. The Board is committed to developing a second proposal that will merit widespread support and seeks the help of all residents in creating a plan that will unite the community."
