Man Dies In LI House Fire, His Parents Survive: Police

Two elderly people escaped a house fire that killed their son on Long Island on Monday evening, according to Suffolk County police.

MASTIC, NY — A man was killed in a house fire on Long Island on Monday evening, according to Suffolk County police.

Police said they responded to 911 calls reporting a house fire on Overlook Drive in Mastic around 6:40 p.m. and found that two residents, John and Maryann Gaeta, escaped the fire.

Their son, Frank Gaeta, 56, was found dead on the back deck of the house, police said.

John Gaeta, 80, and Maryann Gaeta, 81, were transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for smoke inhalation, police said. A Mastic Fire Department firefighter who suffered burns at the scene and was also transported to a hospital for treatment, police said.

Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad and Arson Section detectives are investigating the fire but it appears non-criminal, police said.
