- Police received an emergency call from a house on Park Circle in Shirley and discovered a young couple's bodies inside the residence. Destiny Leinfus and Gavin Bifalco were found on Thursday. An investigation is ongoing to determine if it was a murder-suicide case or if a third person(s) is responsible for their deaths. (Shirley-Mastic Patch)
- A race will be held at the Smith Point Bridge in Shirley hosted by the Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community Library on Sept. 10 at 9 a.m. Registration is $25. Runners and walkers of all levels are welcome. More information here. (Patch)
- For those who enjoy book discussions at the MMS Community Library, stay tuned for the next session on Aug. 25 at 2:15 p.m. The book on the topic will be "Nine Perfect Strangers," by Liane Moriarty. (Patch)
- Stony Brook University requests the community's help to donate to its food pantry. A community service day is being hosted this weekend. Donations will benefit the Harry Chapin Regional Food Bank and the University's pantry. A virtual food drive is also available for those who want to donate but can't attend the events in person.
