SOUTH SHORE, NY — Many shore communities and on the barrier islands were hit hard by the damaging rain- and wind-storm Jan. 9 and the storm tide Jan. 10.

Nelson Vaz, meteorologist with the National Weather Service office at Upton, said areas across Long Island with poor drainage were affected, and coastal flooding was an issue on the shorelines of ocean beaches.

There are other effects that may be as damaging but less noticeable.

"Cesspools get flooded and the human waste washes out into the waterways. This is especially true in low-lying areas like Mastic Beach and Oakdale," Robyn Silvestri, Executive Director of Save The Great South Bay, told Patch. "Plus, there is surely debris from the mainland washing into the bay. People’s hot tubs, backyard items, docks that have been damaged. This is not good for the Bay."
