Enrollment and Regents Exam Scores Fluctuate on District Report Card

The Smithtown Central School District enrollment and Regents Exam passing rates have wavered since the 2007-08 school year, according to the New York State District Report Card released Thursday.

According to the report card, 10,862 students were enrolled in the school district in 2009-2010, up from 10,844 in 2008-09. There was one more student enrolled in the district in 2009-10 than there was in 2007-08, where there were 10,861 students enrolled.

The biggest jump in enrollment was in tenth grade, where there were 48 more students enrolled in 2009-10 (858) than in 2008-09 (810). Following the tenth grade jump in enrollment was 36 more students in eleventh grade in 2009-10 (807) from 2008-09 (771) and 30 more students in fifth grade, with 859 in 2009-10 from 829 in 2008-09.

Sixth grade enrollment saw the biggest drop in 2009-10 from 2008-09 with 39 less students enrolling. There were 892 students enrolled in seventh grade in 2009-10 and 931 enrolled in 2008-09.

Students scoring higher than 55 on the Mathematics B Regents Exam continued to decline, with a 10 percent drop in 2009-10 from 2008-09, going down to 76 percent from 86 percent. There is a 20 percent decline from 2007-08 where 96 percent of students taking the exam scored higher than 55 on the exam.

The biggest increase in students scoring above 55 came with the Physical Setting/Physics Regents Exam, where 95 percent of the students taking the exam in 2009-10 scored above 55 compared to 92 percent in 2008-09.
