Library Prepping Commack and Nesconset Openings, Closing of Smithtown and Kings Park

With the final stages of construction coming to a close in the Commack and Nesconset branches of the Smithtown Special Library District, the Smithtown and Kings Park branches are preparing to shut down for renovations.

According to Library Director Robert Lusak, the library is looking to open the Commack branch the week of April 11, followed by the immediate closing of the Kings Park branch.

“If all goes well, our general contractor is going to do a final cleaning of the Commack building. That would then allow us to reopen Commack to the public next week," Lusak said. 

As for the Nesconset branch, Lusak said it is about three to three-and-a-half weeks behind Commack and will open late April or early May.

“They started the carpeting in the main room [on April 4], offices and children’s rooms and community rooms and Y.A. [young adult] areas are all carpeted. … As soon as that’s done, we’re ready to start the installation of shelving and service desks. We could start that the middle of next week, potentially, if all goes well with the carpet install,” Lusak said.

The Nesconset opening will allow the Smithtown branch to close and complete construction that began in September.

“They started masonry work, so that should take two weeks, two-and-a-half weeks, so by the time Nesconset is ready to open at least the new addition at Smithtown will be 100 percent completed, then Smithtown becomes an interior renovation,” Lusak said.
