Locals Swarm Gas Stations to Fill Up Before Hurricane
The threat of Hurricane Irene hitting Long Island this weekend has local gas stations seeing an abnormal amount of traffic.
Local gas stations have been slammed with customers filling up before Hurricane Irene touches down this weekend.
βWeβve been busy β¦ I tried to order, theyβre coming tomorrow,β said Ariel Fang, manager at the Gulf gas station in Smithtown on the corner of West Main Street and Edgewood Avenue, on Friday.
Currently, regular is $3.83/gallon, midgrade is $4.05/gallon, and premium is $4.15/gallon at the station.

Jailal Phayal, manager at the Sunoco gas station in St. James on the corner of Middle Country Road, said the station has experienced similar traffic.
βWe got a shipment of gas, potato chips, water, things like that. Everybody is getting ready for the weekend,β he said.

Regular at the Sunoco is $3.83/gallon; midgrade is $4.01/gallon; premium is $4.07/gallon.Β
While other stations have received last-minute shipments on fuel, an associate at Wave on Lake Avenue in St. James said even with the extra traffic coming into the station they are set on the supply they have.
Wave is currently charging $3.83/gallon for regular, $3.93/gallon for midgrade, and $4.13 for premium.
Smithtown resident Brian Kachejian said his sole reason for filling up Friday was the hurricane.
βI was worried like everybody else that the hurricaneβs going to cut off electricity and weβll be without gas,β he said.
