Smithtown Notebook: Town Approves New Employees, Parade Permits Issued

This week the town board approved numerous jobs throughout the many town departments and continued to approve spring and summer parade permits.

The Youth Advisory Board has a new officer in Andrew Zodiatis, who was appointed by Supervisor Patrick Vecchio during the April 28 board meeting at the Eugene A. Cannataro Senior Citizen Center. Zodiatis’ term in office will last from April 29 to Dec. 31, 2013.

Other town positions filled during the April 21 board meeting:

  • Daniel Johnson, student intern for the Department of Environment and Waterways
  • Lauren Benz, student intern for the Recreation Department
  • Mariann Werner, full-time mini-bus driver for the Senior Citizens Department
  • Justine Porretto, part-time assistant recreation leader in the School Age Child Care Department
  • Nancy Abrams, mini-bus driver for the Senior Citizens Department
  • Bryan Chess, part-time engineering aide for the Engineering Department
  • Caitlyn Erickson, student intern for the Horizons/Youth Bureau
  • Victor Travaglianti, mini-bus driver for the Office of Handicapped Services

The Nesconset Chamber of Commerce and Tackan Elementary School were granted permits for the annual spring craft fair and the PTA family walk/run, respectively.

The town board held first readings for parades, runs and more during the April 28 meeting, including the Nissequogue River State Park Foundation Sunset Run/Walk, Friends & Farmers/King Park Civic Association Farmers Market, Commack Coalition of Caring 5K Walk/Run, Smithtown Children’s Foundation 5K Run/Walk, Suffolk County Kennel Club Dog Show at Flowerfield Grounds and the Airmid Theater Company Carnival at Kings Park Plaza.

Zoning Board Upholds Strip Mall Parking

Condan Enterprises, the owners of the shopping center on Alexander Avenue in Lake Grove near the Smithhaven Mall, was granted permission to maintain the parking ratio of one space per 166 sq. ft. of gross floor area. The decision made during the Zoning Board of Appeals meeting at the Eugene A. Cannataro Senior Citizen Center on April 26.

Upcoming Town Meetings

The lone town meeting this week is the Planning Board Meeting, held at the Eugene A. Cannataro Senior Citizen Center, located at 420 Middle Country Road on May 4 at 8 p.m.
