'Sweet And Innocent' Birdie: Smithtown Adoptable Pet Of The Week
Birdie, 4 years, was abandoned at a local park. "She was found frightened, confused, and hesitant to leave the spot where she was dumped."
SMITHTOWN, NY β Birdie, a pint-sized female bully mix estimated to be around 4 years old, is the Smithtown Animal Shelter's Pet of the Week.
Birdie has a red coat and white chest, which shelter staff say nearly makes her the doppelgΓ€nger to the 80s movie star Hooch from "Turner & Hooch" if she wasnβt such a "teeny, tiny little thing!!"
"Sweet and innocent little Birdie girl was abandoned at a local park," the shelter wrote. "Her loyalty and intelligence were instantly evident to shelter staff when she was found frightened, confused, and hesitant to leave the spot where she was dumped. It appeared as if she was desperately waiting for her human to come back for her."

When Birdie arrived at the shelter, she was shy and unsure, according to the shelter. However, the team showered her with attention and tons of TLC.
"Birdie quickly revealed what an affectionate and fun loving pup she really is," the shelter stated. "With a gentle approach, some patience, and a handful of treats, Birdie will quickly give her most loyal friendship to all who make her acquaintance."

She is young, beautiful, healthy, and has an unlimited supply of love to share, according to the shelter.
"Birdie deserves a chance to find her happy ever after where she will never be abandoned again. Birdie's energy makes her a perfect fit for a home where she is an only pet and with older kids, preferably over the age of 14."

If you are interested in meeting Birdie, please fill out an application and schedule a date/time to properly interact in a domestic setting, which includes the shelter's Meet and Greet Room, the dog runs, and our Dog Walk trail. Family Pet Meet and Greets and at-home interactions are also welcome and an integral part of the adoption process.
While the shelter is open to the public, it asks that people call ahead to schedule an appointment.
Hours are currently Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays and Wednesday evenings are by appointment only.

The Smithtown Animal Shelter's primary concern is finding the perfect home for each animal that finds his/her way to it. The Animal Control Officers at the Smithtown Animal Shelter will go out of their way to ensure both the rescued and rescuer are made for one another. If you have other pets, you can arrange to bring your four-legged family member into the shelter or they can set up an at-home meet & greet to see how your prospective new addition does with other family members, pets or the household itself. Please allow yourself an hour minimum to meet with your potential new family member.
The shelter is also seeking foster volunteers. Foster parents provide temporary care for cats, kittens and dogs in their own homes. Some animals need as little as two weeks of care, while others may need care for an extended time. Potential fosters need to have no other pets or young children in the home.
