UPDATE: Two Young Sisters Still in Hospital after Main Street Accident

Nine-year-old Melody Burgos is in guarded condition at Stony Brook University Medical Center, after being hit by a car Thursday on Main Street at Lawrence Avenue in Smithtown.

Her sister, Mabel, 13, was also hit, though it appears her injuries were not as severe. Police said Mabel was held overnight for observation at the same hospital.

According to police, a 2010 Lexus SUV, driven by Maria Kolahifar, 66, of Fort Salonga, hit the Central Islip sisters travelling westbound at 5:30 p.m. on the northern side of East Main Street.

Both victims were taken to the Stony Brook University Medical Center. Fire department officials said the 9-year-old was airlifted by the Suffolk County Police Department to the hospital while the 13-year-old was transported via ambulance.

Authorities have not released information on the extent of the Burgos’ injuries.

Police said the SUV was impounded and undergoing a safety check, and an investigation of the accident is underway.

Thursday's accident is at the same scene of two other fatal accidents that occurred within 15 months of each other on Main Street. In November 2009, , who was high on heroin at the time of the accident and later sentenced to up to 12 years in jail. And in February, was struck and killed when a car hit him after leaving Napper Tandy's. He had been celebrating his 33rd birthday at the bar.
