WATCH: Smithtown's First Same-Sex Marriage Applicants
John Garand and Rene Meyer of Hauppauge are set to wed on Tuesday.
Hauppauge residents John Garand, 57, and Rene Meyer, 61, made history Monday morning as the couple filled out the first same-sex marriage application in the Town of Smithtown.
The couple of 31 years was at Town Hall bright and early Monday,Β and is set to wed Tuesday.
While the Town of Brookhaven opened doors for three hours Sunday for 37 same-sex couples to fill out marriage applications, 13 of which walked away from Town Hall married, the Town of Smithtown did not have someone in the office to marry the couple.

Representatives for the town clerkβs office said the office generally does not perform marriages in the office and provides listsΒ of people, including ministers and judges, who can perform the marriages.
The Hauppauge couple is set to wed in a mass ceremony at Carlyle on the Green at Bethpage State Park in Farmingdale. Representatives from Carlyle on the Green said the mass wedding would have close to 700 people in attendance.

Garand and Meyer said they would be heading to Switzerland for their honeymoon.
