VIDEO: VFW Helps St. James Fire Department Raise Flag at 9/11 Memorial
Firefighters from the St. James Fire District asked veterans from VFW Post 395 to raise the flag up the new 9/11 memorial park flagpole Saturday morning.
Firefighters began installation of a flagpole at the 9/11 memorial park at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, but waited until 11 a.m. for the finishing touch on their work β the raising of the flag by veterans from VFW Post 395.
βThe fire department is doing a wonderful job β¦ they asked for our cooperation, weβve always cooperated with the St. James Fire Department, and we were happy to help them and let us participate,β said VFW Post 395 Commander Frank Todaro.
Todaro and the veterans led the firefighters in the Pledge of Allegiance as the American flag and POW/MIA flag was raised.

The department expects to complete construction of the memorial park by the end of August, and is set to hold a ceremony at the park on Sept. 11.
, said there were 18 people from the district at Ground Zero, and the district lost Captain Douglas Oelschlager in the aftermath of the attacks.
