WATCH: George H.W. Bush's Service Dog Sully Honored In Smithtown

SMITHTOWN, NY — Former President George H. W. Bush's service dog Sully attended the unveiling of a statue in his honor in Smithtown on Tuesday. The renowned canine was most famous for assisting President Bush in the last months of his life and attending his state funeral.

After the former president's death, Sully returned to the America's VetDogs campus in Smithtown before being reassigned to the service animal program at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Sculptor Susan Bahary, known for creating the first official war dog memorial "Always Faithful" for the National Museum of the Marine Corps, first sculpted a likeness of Sully for the Bush Presidential Library in Texas.

Bahary created her second statue honoring Sully for America's VetDogs headquarters, where dogs are trained and placed to help those with physical disabilities, blindness, as well as to assist veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder or undergoing rehabilitation in military and VA hospitals. Bahary sells miniature versions of her Sully statues with a portions of the proceeds going to America's VetDogs.

The highly-trained service dogs are placed with those in need at no charge, through charitable funding.
