Eunice Araminta Waithe, 88

Eunice Araminta Waithe, born on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation in 1923, died on Thursday evening. She was 88 years old.

Waithe attended the one-room schoolhouse in Shinnecock as a youth before moving to Bellport with her family, and later Brooklyn.

After marrying the late Herbert Waithe of Brooklyn in 1946, the couple stayed in Brooklyn for another 10 years before moving up to Metheun, MA for 40 years. Eunice worked as a tax examiner during the tax season.

She was widowed in 1989 and thereafter moved back to Shinnecock, where she became active in the Senior Citizens' Club and enjoyed spending time at Curfee's Beach and making trips to the casinos.

She is survived by two sisters, Constance Dunham of Shinnecock and Brooklyn, NY and Geneva Trotman of Shinnecock; two sons, Herbert Waithe Jr. and his wife Laurine Berger-Waithe of Amesbury, MA, and Richard Waithe of Shinnecock; and one daughter and son-in-law, Saundra and Andre Dennis of Shinnecock.

In addition, she leaves behind seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends on Monday evening from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at the Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton. A funeral Service will take place Tuesday morning at 10:00 a.m. at the Shinnecock Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Michael Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Shinnecock Cemetery.
