East End DWI/BWI Patrols to Begin

Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas J. Spota, the chiefs of the east end police departments and representatives of the U.S. Coast Guard will hold a press conference on Tuesday afternoon at 12:30 at the Hampton Bays Coast Guard Station to announce increased sobriety checkpoints across the region.

According to a statement from District Attorney Spota's office East End roads and the Peconic Bay cover 347 miles of land with tens of thousands of summer residents and weekend visitors adding to the already busy year-round traffic on local roads and waterways especially during the busy season from June to September.

“The East End DWI Task Force is the most cost effective way to deal with the menace of drunk and drugged drivers,” said Spota. The Task Force is comprised of members of law enforcement from across the East End including the Suffolk County Police, the Sheriff’s Deputies, the New York State Police, and the US Coast Guard which patrols boats in the waterways.

“Our office deputized Task Force personnel to legally empower this team to aggressively enforce the law across jurisdictional boundaries,” said Spota.
