Man Arrested After Menacing Detective With Knife: Police

He was first seen with a knife in his hand, arguing with someone in a Riverside parking lot, police say.

SOUTHAMPTON, NY — A man was arrested in Riverside after menacing a detective with a knife, police said.

According to Southampton Town police, the incident took place on Monday at about 10:38 p.m., when a Southampton Town Police detective sergeant saw two people in an apparent argument in a parking lot on Flanders Road.

An officer saw Edilverto Velasquez-Tezen, 37, with a knife in his hand, police said.

After being confronted by the detective, the subject menaced him with the knife, police said. Additional uniformed officers responded and, upon seeing the additional officers, Velasquez-Tezen dropped the knife and was placed under arrest, police said. No injuries were reported, police said.

Velasquez-Tezen was brought to Southampton Town Police headquarters and processed; he was charged with one count of second-degree menacing, a misdemeanor, and one count of fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a misdemeanor, police said.

Velasquez-Tezen was released on an appearance ticket to appear in court at a later date, police said.
